Selliing your work via internet dealer

Hi,
I’m an artist new to this forum and have some questions about internet sales of photography. I’ve been approached by someone who is planning to open a gallery in Madrid, Spain that works exclusively with international contemporary artists, who all live far away from the host gallery and country. He is very interested in showing and selling one of my photo projects. Besides the gallery, they will have their own website and a space in artnet.com. They will focus on short edition photography and want to sell work to collectors worldwide via the internet. They will print the work and share all costs with the artist. There is no binding contract.

It all sounds really intriguing and opens up new ways to reach an audience and sell work. The owner seems credible and located me through an on-line artist registry, but as he lives in Madrid, I can’t meet him in person. He seems to be interested in finding sales opportunities for artists that minimize risks, but as this is all new to me, I’m unsure how to proceed. I’m also aware that there are lots of scams out there.

So far, he’s only asking for jpegs, info and prices. I was wondering if anyone has knowledge or familiarity with this, and could offer advice on things like cost sharing, pricing, making editions, red flags to look out for…

Thank you in advance.

Hi Hernan. I’ve already told you all I can about my contact except that he has just finished his masters degree in gallery arts management and has as a priority the printing of the works (sharing all costs with the artist). That’s the part that confuses me. I can’t imagine handing over a disk (or negative) without being present and in control of
a. the look of the print
b. where the print ends up
c. the edition #

especially with no binding contract.

Have you ever seen a business model like this? Thanks for any insight.

PS. I plan to add pictures and links in my profile soon…

Saludos,
Taryn

Taryn…Be very careful. You’ll be sending your work to an unknown person with little gallery experience,in a foreign country, with no kind of a working contract.
He might be honest but you’ll never know. He could sell prints and you’ll never know. Why only Jpeg? Collectible prints should be made from 300 ppi Tiff files. It’s very flattering when a stranger takes interest in your work but business first. Right now you don’t have enough info on this guy. Pump him for more info and see what happens. Just some thoughts.

I wouldn’t trust anyone you don’t know personally or who,at the very least, doesn’t have an existing business with a track record
that you could refer to for credibility.

As far as printing goes,I wouldn’t buy into the “we’ll pay and charge you for your half” scenario.

On the one hand, you will surrender creative license,of the printing, to them if they are,in fact,a legitimate operation this certainly wouldn’t
add anything to your prestige as a collectible artist or worse,it is a spin on the classic scams heaped on model wannabe’s
that get charged upfront for a lousy ‘portfolio’ shoot and then reamed on the backend for prints.

Why don’t you test them by offering to print your own work and collect their half of this expense in cash.
Should give you a quick idea of where they are coming from.

Taryn: I live in Madrid, and maybe I can help. I might know this person, or I can research or even visit him in person and give you my feedback. Let me know if you need my assistance.

Taryn,

sounds too good to be true. you need to meet the guy and see the space. notionally it should be a brilliant business plan – selling great photos of somewhere exotic to people in a place that is far away. I thought so and so I did the reverse to what is being offered to you, I went to New york with images from all over Asia and traipsed round the studios, and nothing this sweet materialised….there are enough home grown artists who have huge portfolios for a studio to be bothered with international artists. Unless they want to make a killing without giving you the full story.

My friend told me that he don’t knows a marchant that works in that style so I add more red light to this issue. I think is better forget all about this proposal. Best

Thank you all for all your help and advice. This forum is wonderful! As it is not possible to meet the guy in person, I think the only feasible approach is to offer to print the work myself and have him pay me half, as Mark proposed. And then wait and see what his reaction is. That way, I can explore it as an exhibition venue without losing too much control or money. Tonight I’m going to speak with one of the other artists approached, and am hopeful that she has some concrete information on him.

Best, Taryn
