About

Sergeant Frank Hudec was born and raised in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada, where he developed his passion for photography and the outdoors at the age of 13. After spending the early part of his Canadian Forces (CF) career in the combat arms with the 3rd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment and attaining the rank of sergeant – he decided to voluntarily re-muster and became a military photographer in 1991. Over the years his work has taken him across Canada and around the world. In 1996 he was the still photographer on a CF-led team sent to the jungles of northern Burma (Myanmar) to recover the remains of six Canadian WWII airmen. The airmen and their C47 Dakota transport aircraft, were discovered 45 years after they first disappeared – during a monsoon in the closing days of the Second World War.

In the past several years Sergeant Hudec has photographed CF operations in the Golan Heights (Op DANACA), Egypt (Op CALUMET), the Arabian Gulf Region (Op APOLLO), as well as CF personnel deployed with the Canadian Contingent NATO Airborne Early Warning Force (CC-NAEWF) in Germany. He has also been to Afghanistan on several occassions covering Op ATHENA, Canada’s contribution to the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Kabul. Other missions photographed include: JTF Principal in Port-au-Prince, Haiti; Exercise NARWHAL in the Cumberland Peninsula area of Baffin Island; and Op SIRIUS, Canada’s contribution to NATO’s Campaign Against Terrorism mission, known as Operation ACTIVE ENDEAVOUR. He has been on numerous boarding operations with HMCS Winnipeg during Op ALTAIR in the Arabian Gulf Region and has photographed Canada’s Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) during the aftermath of the October 8, 2005 earthquake in Pakistan-administered Kashmir. Recently, he has returned from covering the Military Training Assistance Program in Ghana, Africa.
