Shooting for NGO's

Hey, this is kinda a newbie question but I was just wondering if anyone could suggest where I might find out more about opportunities regarding photo work for NGO’s. I’m guessing there is not like a central source of information and that it works pretty much like getting any other kind of freelance work… but if anyone has experience shooting for any NGO’s I’d love to hear.

Do staff jobs exist? Do they pay or do they just sustain your living while you are out there. Do they expect to just get volunteer work?

I won’t be looking for awhile as I’m just about to start a graduate degree program in Ohio this fall, but I just want to know where to start looking and to keep my eyes open for opportunities, so if anyone has experience or advice with it I’d love to hear it. And if you have shot for an NGO, how did you get the gig, or did they come to you?

Thanks – peter hoffman

I think you just need to call up the NGOs you are interested in working for and ask to show the photo editor your work. I just did this yesterday and and sent my url.

Hi Peter, I was interested in doing this as well a while ago, and I got in touch with some NGOs, some of them do pay – though is not too much, mainly to be able to live there, some don’t. The ones who do pay is not a permanent job, but it would be like an assignment and it would depend in the moment that they are whether they need or not a photographer. You should contact the NGOs on a regular basis and see what the story is.
Good luck!

Hi Peter,

I’ve being working with some of them…Some pay and other pray.
Maybe the better way is to start colaborating low price, but for travel there is another story. The big ones usually contact the photographers they use to work with, or that are already in place…
The best way (for me) is to aproach personally some of them showing your work and intentions…
Always better if you show you are interested in “Them”..they labour..You know..
Each one is a world..
Hope help..

good luck

Hey Travis. That link isn’t working for me. Are you sure it is the correct spelling? Thanks.
