Only my stupid opinion, but sticking an f/4 lens on such a promising machine is pathetic.

i am with stupid,

it is a cool looking little camera, something to carry around when i don’t feel like lugging an slr but having only F/4 would mean sticking to high iso’s which these types of cameras are not notorious at being good at.

by s. b. ramin | 30 Jan 2008 21:01 | Vancouver, Canada |
And there are doubts as to what the real resolution might be. At Sigma they don’t seem to count like everyone else.

by David Carr | 30 Jan 2008 21:01 | Paris, France |
I think the reason for a f4 lens is that a lower f number lens would make the lens and camera bigger. The reason the Ricoh GRD can do it is that it has a small sensor. The large sensor on the DP1 should give it good high ISO performance.

F4 sucks but I’d still buy it.

by Brambor | 30 Jan 2008 23:01 | Windham, United States |
stupid is who stupid does…
nice specs except the f4 lens. no lo’light flickin there…

by marius sortland myklebust | 30 Jan 2008 23:01 | fredrikstad, Norway |
a primary camera it isn’t but as a supplement, pocketable, f4 wide angle with image stabilization will still let you shoot in low light … me thinks…

dpreview says it will be ready in Spring 2008 http://www.dpreview.com/news/0801/08013108sigmadp1.asp

I think Sony’s new full frame chip is more interesting

James, how long before you can buy this in a camera? Or do you plan on attaching it to your hat?

P.S. I should shut up as DP1 is still a vaporware ;-)

Yippee!

Well the resolution is only 2640 × 1760 pixels – about 1000 less on the long side than the Ricoh GRD2. That’s going to limit what you do in terms of enlargement. The lens is more than 1 stop slower and the larger sensor means less depth of field. That, in turn, means that it would have to focus faster and more accurately than the GRD2 where the dof can compensate slow or inaccurate focusing in some cases. We’ll just have to wait and see..

by David Carr | 02 Feb 2008 17:02 | Paris, France |
There are some samples online here judge for yourself.
The “only” 5 megapixel sensor won’t be a problem, if it delivers as promised.
I suppose the Sigma files should have at least the same amount of headroom as (5mp) Olympus E-1 files, and those produce beatiful A1+ prints.

>Well the resolution is only 2640×1760 pixels

True, but this is pixel for pixel information. The DP1 uses a Foveon type sensor, not the traditional Bayer pattern variety you find in all other cameras.

Very nice samples. But have to stupidly point out the three blown-to-white pixel clusters here, one on the top right and two lower right. I’d have a hard time living with them, on every image. Otherwise it’s certainly a lovely ISO 800 file.

I thought those were dust specks after the scan

…evil…

by Brambor | 03 Feb 2008 01:02 | Windham, United States |
The stupid thing only shoots up to ISO 800 ?!

f4 @ ISO 800? I guess you better learn to appreciate flash fill photos. :-)

Good thing I didn’t wait.. My Panasonic LX2 does f2.8 on ISO 1600… It’s not great in lowlight as the Canon SLR, but it’s there when I need it.

by Fang Liang | 03 Feb 2008 04:02 | san francisco, United States |
And you can buy three of them for the stupid price of one these.

by Stupid Photographer | 03 Feb 2008 12:02 (ed. Feb 3 2008) | Holy Smokes, Holy See |
3 of them? That’s like 30-megapixel altogether!

Fucking Brilliant!! That’s just like stacking them pixies together like them Foveons.

Hmmm….,pixels…. I like pixels.

by Fang Liang | 03 Feb 2008 14:02 | san francisco, United States |
more sample images from a pre-production DP1 now online here
looks good to me.
