The ‘Society for Humanistic Photography’ was founded in 2006 by a group of photographers and persons interested in the visual. We all love to produce and to look at photographs. With our work we aim to get involved into the public discussion about social and political issues. In the confusing masses of pictures, flooding our daily lifes, we would like to set a course and to make photographic positions, that are dealing with socially relevant topics, known to a broad public. At the beginning only a small circle of enthusiasts, we are cooperating today with reknown museums, exhibition spaces and institutions in Germany and abroad. With our exhibitions, publications, lectures and workshops we were able to reach an audience of several hundreds of thousands of people already.

Excellent photo reportages depend on compelling stories. And Berlin is a city of many stories. Obviously they are not told by themselves, to narrate them thrillingly affords a certain degree of conception.

Which methods of storytelling do exist, how do we research details to make our ideas concrete, how do we transform them into fascinating stories and how do we find the appropriate images for them? How do we improve our personal visual language in order to support what we want to express and what might be the best technique for these purposes. All these questions will be answered by discussing each individual project of the participants under the guidance of much acclaimed photographer Robert Knoth.

After finding the images for our stories a new process begins: the storylines have to be reworked and the editing process starts – the selection and combination of those images that suit best to make the story interesting and above all convincing.

The result of this process, which is led and intensly accompanied by Robert Knoth during the four day workshop will be enthralling photo reportages on the city of Berlin.

The workshop is being held in English. Requirement is an idea for a photo reportage on Berlin.
