Somalia

Anyone keeping an eye on the situation in Somalia?
Worked there before?
Considering a trip to the region?

I’d like to know what you’re thinking.

Thanks

Adam

adam; would love to go but can’t afford to on my own. people are asking $500/day for car, hotel, fixer and such. i suspect that rates are higher than usual because of the recent focus and other big media present there. so interested yes, but would love to find a ‘team’ to organize something.

Yes I am also looking for a ‘team’ to pool resources, ideas, etc.

I’m sure there are ways to do it cheaper if you know locals or hook up with other journalists who are already there…. $500 a day for one person is a lot… it would be doable with 3 or 4 people.

What are your thoughts on when to go? Are you planning to enter Somalia right away or bunker down in a neighboring country and wait and watch?

adam: i agree, $500/day per person is a lot to ask but that is what i have been quoted so far. in any case, i am prepared to go whenever it becomes possible (financially, logistically or whatever). i think that there are stories to be done now, and stories to be done in a few weeks from now. i suspect that somalia will disappear from the headlines shortly but i would still be interested. keep me posted. thanks. asim

Adam: The situation is a little tense, in terms of cost you are looking $50.00 a night with one of the save hotels and around $100.00 a day for a car and a fixer. You should bunker down until the situation in K4 settles down.

I was in Mogadishu a week before the Swedish journalist was killed. I wouldn’t go again until there is more clarity about who is in charge. It is extremely difficult to move and of course still very dangerous.

Thanks Evelyn, we shall see how the situation develops in the next few weeks.
