About

I am a freelance photographer, French native, based in Washington DC. I have previously lived in Cambodia many years where I managed the Popil PhotoGallery, an artistic space exclusively dedicated to photographic arts in Phnom Penh. I also taught photography and photojournalism to Cambodian undergraduate students.

From Washington DC, I now continue my work on the Cambodian people, documenting the life stories of Cambodian Americans in the Unites States, http://www.stephanejanin.com/ + http://khmerabroad.blogspot.com/. With this work I collaborate to the Cambodian News of Voice of America Radio web site, and have contributed to Ka-set, an online media based in Phnom Penh (http://ka-set.info/).
Aside from this documentary work on the Cambodian Americans, I develop a personal project of images shot with boxes: http://www.thesubstancebeneaththevisible.com/

I am also a cultural activist and have recently organised “ShadowPlay1” (theme: Borderlands), an event of projected photography with live music, in Takoma Park, MD, the city where I live. “ShadowPlay1” has slideshown the works of 12 international photographers along with the music of Indie musician Peter Maybarduk.
“ShadowPlay2” is not yed decided but in genesis, a few more talks and meetings should soon permit to announce the second issue of this exciting event…
