Stolen Computer

Hi hi all, unfortunately my laptop and wonderful 5d where stolen last night and so looking into options I was told about a program called undercover which essentially tracks your mac and whenever the thief goes online their location, via ip address is known, so hope this helps anyone unlucky enough to be stolen from.

Additionally, some cameras automatically upload to the web; if you happen to have one of these cameras, again you can catch the thieves by contacting your picture publisher and see what address they’ve been uploaded from.

Hoping this never happens to any of you, however, if so, at the very least there are some options out there. Shinji, many thanks for the tips.

Thanks…but what about cameras? Canon or Nikon? Whatever. Just curious.

Greg – he said “5d”. That would be a Canon.
Good luck to you, Jake!!

Thanks Jake- I especially like the bit about your Mac “shouting a message” that it has been stolen.
Now if it could just spray the offender with CS gas and apply handcuffs too that would be just great :-)

IF you know the serial number and you have a CPS account tell them that you camera 5D is stolen for a service of repair they have to bring it to the CPS. You question about you laptop is a IP address for internet is not working because a IP for the internet have to do with the provider ! But if you had a Mac Laptop ?? Than this machine have is own number from the factory !! like 00:06:93:bt:84:a0 and this number you need id. If you don’t know it ?? you have a WiFi set up for this machine you can find this number in you WiFi Router/modem ?? let it know by the factory that this a a stolen Laptop. If you need more info you can call me by skype at robertgoddyn good luck

this from a friend, robert, thanks for the help,

Orbicule is a small company in Europe and has not support for when the software FAILS. As it did for me. One day turned on my MBA and a screen said it that my MBA has not been on the internet for 2 mos. (WRONG) and that is was considered stolen. (wrong again) no way to get past this screen and since Orbicule wont answer any support emails and doesnt have a support phone I was SOL. So think before you try this very poor excuse for protection software.

Adeona – http://adeona.cs.washington.edu/

Free and open source. The Mac OS X version also has an option to capture pictures of the laptop user or thief using the built-in iSight camera and the freeware tool isightcapture

I haven’t tried it myself.

Too late to help Jake, but there’s such a thing as theft recovery software, such as the following:

http://adeona.cs.washington.edu/
http://www.orbicule.com/undercover/

If anyone’s paranoid and wants a little extra insurance, it’s worth analyzing these options. (These systems aren’t foolproof and don’t guarantee recovery, of course; caveat emptor etc.)

one more link to toss into the pot. lowjack for laptops. I have this on my own computer. It works wherever police agencies use lojack to recover stolen cars.

He Patrick good advice but Jake have no laptop any more ?? your advice is for if you have a laptop and they steel it !!

Obviously too late to install tracking software, but did you have any other programs installed that connect out to the Internet that the thief might have clicked on?
If you regularly used an FTP program or email with a smaller ISP, you could contact the provider and look for recent logins or failed logins. Logins like that are logged and easily searchable, if you have access to the log files.

If they aren’t large, faceless companies, you may be able to get someone interested in helping you recover your gear.
It’s a long shot, but may be worth it.
Good luck!

Everyone else, go install Adeona.

Hi Jim, yeah I thought about that. Apple regularly asks me if i want to update various programs as does Adobe. The question I’m trying to answer is: for someone like apple to know where you are, do you have accept the upgrade or is the fact that they’ve merely contacted you enough to give an idea of the location. I’m heading into a mac store this afternoon to replace some of the missing software so hopefully i’ll have an answer soon. Thanks guys and all the best,
Jake

Sorry to hear this Jake. Very thoughtful of you to share your research on the topic instead of looking for 1000s of LSer’s shoulders to cry on (something I probably would have been tempted to do).

Un abrazo,

Adam

Hi Adam and all. Thanks for the kind wishes. I’m kind of in a defiant mood right now, not letting this loss stop me especially with a few projects underway i just have to keep going and in spite of whomever nabbed it refuse to let it stop me, although, yeah what a major pain in my ass………..ok here’s the update and at least one helpful bit of info: if you have a google account and haven’;t changed your password when you log into your account have a look at the bottom of the page, there it will tell you of all account activity, ie, if your account is being accessed anywhere else you’ll be able to from what ip address. This would have only been good for me for a few hours as I changed my password. I asked if they could look into their logs to see past history and the only way they can do that is via a court order, so for me, it’s not worth the hassle and time. Re my accounts with Adobe and Apple, they where of little help as they couldn’t disclose any info, yup the faceless hertless companies of the world. Anyway, thought the google bit was informative, so hope that helps. All the best,
j

hey Jake. i hope you were insured. if not make sure you do. unfortunately it’s never a matter of if but of where and when. i know it’s a bit pricy but it’s worth it. i have the nppa one and it works fine for me.
sorry for your troubles. i think most of us know how much it hurts.

Hi Jake, sorry to hear this… i hope the thief is going to get busted big time!
good luck

by Thierry Stefanopoulos | 25 Aug 2008 21:08 | Miami, United States |
everyone, thanks for all these useful tips, but unfortunately this does not help in the countries where people hardly know what is internet, so just back up all the time. I had my laptop stolen in Abkhazia two days ago, and i did not back up, so mostly I have to blaim myself rather then the thiefs. even right now I’m still in police station where now I spend days instead of shooting

Let Apple know in your area…In Israel here…Had a laptop stolen a few years back and contacted Apple here about it — Sure enough it turned up in their repair shop a year or so later! Took a few months and a lawyer to get it back — evidently the thieves have more rights here then the victim, but some of the data was still there! good luck…
