Studio lights rental in Venice (Italy)?

Can anyone tell me if I can rent some studio lighting equipment for on-location use in Venice, Italy? I will be photographing art objects, sculptures and art installations.

Thank you

Although I’ve visited Venice a few times, I had never explored anything photographic, labs or equipment, in Venice (I assume you mean to work on Venice the lagoons. On the mainland Venice, Venice Mestre, it seems that there might such rental available since it is more industrialized there.

Do you speak any Italian? How about googling in Italian for studio lights rental with Venezia Mestre?

There is a photography equpment store and a few labs in Padova, perhaps an hour away. You might try there as well.

Evangelo,

I just remembered that I have a photographer contact in Venice, of all places. He is not a Lightstalker, but he is on Flickr, and since he is a sort of “fan” of mine, calling, as his favorite, this photo of mine, called “Campanile of San Marco in Late Afternoon Sun, Venice, Italy.”

If you are still searching for studio lighting equipment rental in Venice, Italy, please post here or PM me. I will be in church for the next few hours, but I will check back LS this afternoon in Baltimore, MD, USA.

E.C.,

I sent a Flickr mail to Anton Bawab in Venice, Italy. When are you going to be in Venice?

E.C.,

I received a Flickr mail back from Anton, but alas he no longer lives there. He did not answer my question about your studio lights rental in this Flickr mail.

I’ll e-mail you with a couple of names you can contact in Padova. You may have to call them. I am posting this here in case somebody else notices your need.

Evangelo… Maybe your best prospects are going to be in Milan. Don’t know where myself but it is Italy’s media center. Lots of photogs. to supply.

You might be right, Gregory.

I was looking at my only copy of an Italian photography magazine I have earlier and now had another look at the article (all in Italian, of course) for any pertinent information I could glean from a feature article on studio lighting.

Here is a column info as part of an article written by Roberto Mineo:
Tutte le immagini ed i backstage sono stati ripresi durante le lezioni del Master di Moda I livello della John Kaverdash Accademia di Fotografia, Via G.E. Pestalozzi, 10 Milano. Coloro che fossero interessati ai Master di specializzasione o ai corsi in genere dell’Accademia di Fotografia possono fissare un colloguio orientativo telefonnando al numero 02/8912.3696, presso la sede di via G.E. Pestalozzi 10, Milano

I was in Milan in 2002/3 and have used a pro lab there. If I can find the name of the lab, I’ll send it to you, Evangelo. Also I have the name of an Italian photographer who did a photography book of Padua (Padova). His name is Sebastian Scattolin (s.scatto@libero.it), he is from Treviso and studied in Milan. His book includes photography of artworks. Another book of Padua includes photography close to your project since it includes a number of sculpture pieces. However, the book was done by several photographers, so without spending a lot of time I cannot nail down which photographer has done sculpture pieces. The book publisher is listed with the website www.biblos.it and its e-mai: info@biblos.it

Perhaps you might want to fly into Milan, and look for your studio lighting and have it shipped to your Venice location.

I found the contact and web address of John Kaverdash, Accademia di Fotografia in Milan. There was a big ad on the inside back cover of the magazine I mentioned above. It is a school, but they should have info on studio lights rental.

The photo magazine I was referring to earlier is Fotografia.

http://www.fotografia.it

It is published by Editrice Progresso in Milan. The magazine’s managing editor was Maurizio Capobussi in 2004. Its office telephone number is 02/70.00.22.22 or fax 02/71.30.30

Finding rental lighting gear in Venice is akin to finding it in Disneyland. Nearby Mestre is just a small industrial town without much to offer in the rental department.
The only thing available is movie lighting and assistance ( Mestiere Cinema) but I don’t think you are shooting a movie!

As Greg says, you are better off contacting rental places in Milan.

The best in Milan is EXIT ,phone +39 023451333, website http://www.exitrental.com

You can get just about everything you will need there and they are extremely
professional.
I don’t know about getting the gear to Venice but I’m sure they will help you on that one.

It may also be a bit of a hassle moving stuff around, as Venice is (obviously) made up of canals, so a car is out of the question beyond a certain point!
