Teru X-rays Fedex Afghanistan
|
Hey All,
Teru is in Afghanistan and asked me to post this:
has anyone used DHL or Fedex to ship film internationally recently – I need to move a package of film from Afghanistan to the US, and am having difficulty finding out if film will be damaged by X ray machines. Alternately, does anyone know of a good film processing lab in Islamabad or Cochin?
thanks,
James

I use Fedex to ship Tri-X regularly and I’ve never had any film damaged. The only problem that I’ve had with them is that they don’t ship to POBox addresses to some countries.

thanks james and peter – also if anyone can point me towards a place that sells or rents camera gear in islamabad would be much appreciated.

i used dhl from kabul to ship medium format col. neg. 400 and 800iso and it was ok, but i made a note not to X-ray it
|
i have had negative and slide films (100, 400 ISO) sent through x-rays repeatedly (most was 12 times in one trip) and the film has never been affected. and here i am talking about pakistani, american, haitian and indian airport x-ray machines. if sending via courier, mark clearly as “Do Not X-Ray” and you should be just fine. asim

It may help if you have a Fed Ex account. The problem that can happen with Fed Ex is it depends on the people running the joint locally. I have shipped medium format neg with no problems but I would advise you to check with the Fed Ex office in Kabul what the deal is with customs. Most Fed Ex shipments are held by customs sometimes up to 2 days pending clearance.
I have a Fed Ex account and it’s worth emailing say Fed Ex in NY and ask them to fax a letter to the local Fed Ex office confirming your status(assuming you have an account) which should facilitate easy clearance once the local man has watched you pack it and seal it in front of him it should be fine.
No guarantees customs at destination will not tear it open though.
If that happens then usually the shipment will get released but customs will levy a charge for opening it which Fed Ex will pass on to the recipient.
Hope that helps as I have had many years of dealing with Fed Ex and it’s usually 90% reliable.

why Cochin ? Mumbai and Delhi has excellent film processing labs.
|
hi everyone, thanks for the advice here and all the PMs – film went out from KAF DHL this morning.
Anamitra – I was thinking of Cochin labs just because I am already going there – but if you can recommend a place for C41 in Delhi it would be good to know. Islamabad also.
thanks again, T

A reliable adress in Delhi, actually the lab I always go before leaving India :
Profolab – 140B – Community Centre – Jamrudpur – New Delhi – 11048
Tel : 011-29242402
Not that far from Nehru Place.
I gave them E6 films : perfect, and C41 negatives : perfect for scanning. Just avoid your precious black and white films… Never processed better than yourself or your best lab magician, if you have one !
By the way, it’s also much cheaper than in Europe for a daily professional service.
Ciao,
Seb.
