The M.I.L.K. photographic competition

Photographic competition opens with $50,000 top prize

Global contest inspired by Family of Man exhibition returns with Elliott Erwitt as its judge

M.I.L.K. Licensing has launched a photographic competition with a $125,000 prize fund.

The competition, which is run in association with Elliott Erwitt, is open to any photographer, but images must relate to the themes of friends, families, lovers and laughter. The winner, who will pick up a $50,000 prize, will be chosen from a final shortlist of 150 images, all of which will be included in a new publication, ‘Fresh M.I.L.K.: Friends, Families, Lovers & Laugher’, scheduled for autumn 2009. All featured photographers will retain copyright on their images in exchange for granting M.I.L.K. a non-exclusive licence.

For more information, and to submit an image online click here http://www.freshmilkphotos.com. The competition closes in December 2008.

The M.I.L.K. photographic competition first surfaced in 1999, when British publisher Hodder Headline (now Hachette Livre) held an award dedicated to the same themes as the current contest. The 300 winning images were chosen by Erwitt, and the competition attracted 40,000 entries from photographers in over 164 countries, including four Pulitzer Prize winners.

Best,

youme.

Thanks for posting this. Is there anywhere we can see previous winners? I might have missed a link on the website but I couldn’t see one…

the page is not built to be linked to a specific part but the photos of past winners are under “what is milk” – “milk images”

or the rather broken link here

http://www.freshmilkphotos.com/engine.php?id=4

its just a selection and doesn’t give credit to the photographer.

Thanks SB, I saw those but they’re from 2001, I was hoping for some images from recent years.

This contest has only taken place once before. That’s why it’s called “Fresh Milk”.

Ahh okay, I misunderstood. Thanks!

I was one of the winners in the Family category of the original competition. It was well run and had a great exhibition and book, plus an international presence of the project.
The only thing I regretted about it was signing a ten year license deal with them on my winning image. They have since dropped this exclusive license deal though.

There publish in Germany, a very fine series of books based on their competitions. Personally, I rather enjoy and appreciate their orientation in photography. One of the books I own is called LÄCHELN von ganzem Herzen/Smile from the whole heart. MILK= Moments Intimacy Laughter Kinship.
This book published from the MILK competition may be seen by going here: www.knesebeck-verlag.de
If you aspire to do something positive with your image making, then I believe it is worth your while to submit. Good Luck to all.

Cheers,
