The perfect assignment...

Hi LS!

If it could be anything, what assignment or ‘job’ would you most like to receive and are ready to do?

Wishing it will come to you..

Peace,

Jenny

Most excellent question. Will think on it and post back soon. Hope it fleshes out to be an interesting thread. LS has been rather quiet of late.

Hi Jenny,
Very good question.
Right now I think it would have to be a three month assignment in Polynesia for a story about the rising sea level threat to the life of the islanders. Well, ok-maybe starting next month at the end of the wet season!
But actually I’d settle for pretty much any assignment at the moment-very quiet with not much happening in the UK since Easter.

Being among the first passengers aboard a Richard Branson commercial spaceflight.

Going from producer to consumer on the top Michelin Star restaurants of the world.
Starting with artisan producers/farmers/fishermen making/catching/rearing food right through to the kitchens and then to the food.
Then probably something worthwhile to expunge my feelings of guilt.

I’d love someone to pay me to follow a sub-Saharan African as he (as it would probably be a man) sets out from his village on a migration to Europe, across the dessert and the sea, avoiding bandits, thirst, unscrupulous traffickers, drowning, EU fences… I don’t know how these guys do it.

Then I’d buy him a meal in one of Con’s three-star restaurants from the huge sums I’d make selling the pictures to glossy magazines, so they can run them next to skinny models advertising smelly things and an in-depth analysis of what Victoria Beckam is wearing this week. Yup, that’s gonna happen.

Cheers, PHC.

Nice one Paul.

i saw a great exhib in the CCCB in Barcelona from a French (?) photog last summer, he did document the whole trip of immigration into fort Europe from SS Africa. Cant find it in the CCCB archives of my memory- sorry. It was really great though.

Con, you probably saw this by Olivier Jobard:

Various figures from history photographed in my back yard, playing with my dog!

Wow. That’s quite a body of work. Thanks for the link David. I remember some of the pictures of the boat episode from somewhere but I’ve never seen the whole thing.

So that’s done then! In that case my next “perfect assignment” is a journey down the Danube using the commercial craft that carry goods from one town to another, all the way to the Black Sea.

Unless Con knows someone who’s done that too, of course.

Cheers, PHC.

paul – its damn hard to find anything that hasn’t already been done, but i think glenn might be on to something!

there are no really good pics of napoleon, for example. especially not playing with glenn’s dog. jesus neither …

by david sutherland | 03 Apr 2008 14:04 | London, United Kingdom |
i’d have to be crazy to post my perfect assignment on a public message board.

If I didn’t already have what I think is the best possible photo gig, I would not be a stupid photographer.

My mate Drew Gardner photographed the relatives of famous historic figures-http://www.drewgardner.co.uk/ then go to people>portraits>descendants….You will find Napoleon, and a descendant of Nelson in there!

Damn it JWR – are there really no new ideas under the sun?

Some remarkable similarities on Drew’s site – Cromwell especially. But I always thought Van Morrison looked more like Brunel. One for Private Eye: “Could they be, in any way…”

Cheers, PHC.

:-) Afraid it’s all been done before Paul. I keep meaning to ask Drew if he had been busy with photoshop on those-they are remarkably similar aren’t they.

An all expenses paid (including developing-developing costs are killing me), complete with free Leicas that I get to keep afterwards, round the world photographic exploration of war and peace and their relationship to gender issues in all the best delicatessens on the planet. The hunt for the perfect mortadella continues…

by Akaky | 03 Apr 2008 18:04 | New York , United States |
You know how you spend most assignments dealing with petty crap and admin and photo editors that could not find you if they had a map, so how about this…..
Give me cash, give me leicas and leave me the hell alone for a few months and I will bring back pictures that will blow your frikking sox off!!

by Shayne Robinson | 05 Apr 2008 17:04 | Luanda, Angola |
All expenses paid three month motortrip trough the Middle East documenting the cultural diversity of the Islam. Come back here to the Netherlands to have it published in every major magazine. Obviously I will be sponsored by Leica and Gauloises and have my work distributed trough Magnum(where I will recieve instant full membership because of my lovely personality and fine pictures).

by Rutgher Pruijm | 07 Apr 2008 14:04 | Rotterdam, Netherlands |
Hey Rutger, that was MY idea ! :))
Well I mean the publishing and Magnum part (could be VII too)...

Perfect assignement could be some rich adventurous guy (or beautiful girl why not ?) contracts me to do a 3 years world wandering (all costs payed and whatever photo machine and lenses I want + a book and various exhibits worldwide)
Sounds pretty cool huh ?

Oh, there’s someone ringing at the door, would this guy be already here ? :D

Cheers and thanks for the dreamin’ !

by Heimana | 08 Apr 2008 05:04 | Brussels, Belgium |
Well Helmana I am willing to trade my Magnum membership for a VII membership so if you really want Magnum… kind of like trading cards no? ;)

by Rutgher Pruijm | 08 Apr 2008 08:04 | Rotterdam, Netherlands |
Well, as I have already a free signup on both…

It was more to BE part of one of these agencies :p

(do you have more memberships to trade ? :D )

by Heimana | 08 Apr 2008 09:04 | Brussels, Belgium |
Magnum, VII, pish posh! Agencies come and go, but mortadella is forever!

by Akaky | 08 Apr 2008 20:04 | New York , United States |
okay… what about Mortadella Agency ?

Maybe maybe that could be a good shot ?

Mortadella Agency gets you the real and genuine mortadella all around the world !

by Heimana | 08 Apr 2008 20:04 | Brussels, Belgium |
:-)

by Stupid Photographer | 09 Apr 2008 19:04 | Holy Smokes, Holy See |
A QTVR producing assignment at eh…anywhere.
