The Paley Center for Media
Time and Place
Wednesday, October 1, 2008
6:30pm – 8:30pm
The Paley Center for Media
25 West 52nd Street, New York, NY 10019
Description
Moderator: James F. Hoge, Jr., editor, Foreign Affairs
Panel: Photojournalists Gary Fabiano, Timothy Fadek, Christopher Hondros, and John Smock; International Center for Journalists’ President Joyce Barnathan and BusinessWeek’s Assistant Managing Editor for International and Policy Christopher Power.
In the modern political arena, where most everything is staged or canned for the benefit of the press, the power of a single iconic image to reveal or condemn, celebrate or catalyze, remains as vital as ever. Long after the ballots have been counted, it is the work of the photojournalist that serves as the legitimizing document of the democratic process. In this event, a panel of noted photojournalists will share their experiences in covering elections around the globe, and will explore such topics as the relationship between democracy and a free press, the role of still photography in a 24-hour television news cycle, and their collective responsibility as surrogate witnesses to the movement of history.
The event also kicks off The Power of Elections Photo Exhibit to be featured at the Steven Spielberg Gallery in The Paley Center for Media in New York from Oct. 3 through Nov. 5. The collection showcases the work of renowned photojournalists who have captured pivotal moments in history, including Pakistan’s Benazir Bhutto (see above photo), campaigning just before her assassination, and the barrier-breaking candidates in the 2008 U.S. presidential campaign. The photos cover elections in more than 15 countries over the past 40 years. You can see all of the photos at www.icfj.org/photoauction.
These signed photos, donated to ICFJ by participating photographers, will be available for bidding starting Oct. 1 at a silent auction online at www.icfj.org/photoauction. and at the ICFJ Awards Dinner on Nov. 12, at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, DC at 6 pm. Proceeds will be used for programs designed to advance quality journalism worldwide and to purchase camera equipment for participating photographers in developing countries.
