You have a demonstrable talent for telling stories in photos and in video, and you can do it on a daily deadline. You can take direction from editors and respond to constructive criticism. Sure, we can teach you software like Premiere and Photoshop, and how to shoot video on a dSLR with a wireless lav system – but the more you know on Day One, the better. Bonus points if you speak Spanish. What Will You Do for Us? While learning about our newsroom’s operations, you’ll work alongside our staff photographers to shoot for The Victoria Advocate, produce multimedia for victoriaadvocate.com and other publications. You will work a full-time schedule set by the multimedia editor. We love to publish long-term photo and video stories here. Provided you complete your daily assignments, we encourage and promote in-depth visual storytelling. (For example, our former intern’s story on Alzheimer’s Disease was published last week.) What We Will Do For You: Our pledge is to prepare you for the workforce and mentor you. You will receive regular feedback on your work. You will get lots of newsy, published images for you portfolio. Based on the quality of your work, you will be eligible for consideration of full-time opportunities in the newsroom, if they become available. (And we mean it. Two of our current full-time staff members started as multimedia interns). We can also offer professional letters of recommendation. What You Will Get From Us: Free use of the Advocate’s furnished, two-bedroom company apartment (to be shared with another intern). A weekly stipend of $115. Gas mileage reimbursement on assignments at a company rate based on current prices. Use of company multimedia equipment. (We’re an all-Canon shop for both photo and video). Internship credit through your university. Free weekday lunches in the Advocate cafeteria. (Our hamburgers are the stuff of local legend). The multimedia internship begins on or before June 1 and ends on or before Sept. 15. You will report directly to the Photo/Video Editor. The position is based at The Victoria Advocate office in Victoria, Texas (USA, not Schweiss-Balgrada).
