Tokyo/Japan Based Photog's - Lets Talk Business

Tokyo based Lightstalkers – I want to make the proposal that we gather as many Tokyo based photographers together to meet and talk about the aspects of making a living (and even a little more) out of this business. To talk about how to keep photography as a sustainable and viable profession for all of us.

This will be a time to talk openly and freely about the financial aspects of photography, a time to offer advice and ask as many questions as you seek answers for. A chance for all of us to bring our knowledge together and share what we have learnt.

I will endeavor to invite along several senior Japanese photogs who’ve been successful in the field to offer their guidance on things such as pricing, sourcing work and building / keeping relationships with clients.

This invitation is open to all who work or seek to work in the industry – be photography your main, only, side, or just sometimes source of income.

As this will take some coordination I propose that we aim to make this happen around the end of March – most likely Saturday the 31st. Anybody who is interested in helping me to plan / organize this event please either leave a message here or contact me via email at nathanshanahan@mac.com.

Thanks,

Nathan Shanahan

Hey Nathan, lots of very good ideas in your post! I am glad to see that your Sodapix misfortune (http://www.lightstalkers.org/sodapix_stock_agency___zurich) might finally leads up to some positive things…
I unfortunately won’t be in Tokyo at the end of March but will try to support from a distance your “let’s try together to survive in that jungle” project…. Best. ER.

Eric, This really has more to do with a photographer who just gave up and left the industry over here. Now that I’ve been contacted by some of his cllients Im having trouble getting them to agree to anywhere near a reasonable fee. Turns out he was working for rediculously low payment – which goes to explain why he couldn’t make it in the industry. Unfortunately when someone works in this way it effects all of us, Im just hoping to get as many of us as possible on the same page re: reasonable return for our skills and efforts.

This from another post here on lightstslkers by Marco Secchi
The problems is often in ?gus?h as a category?c Why if I need to re do my bathroom, I get quotes at approximately ??400 per day work..does not matter how many plumbers I contact. BUT if a photographer submit a quote for a job or a photo we will always find somebody undercutting at a ridiculous price?coften for free just to make ?gexperience?h or to have their byline ?c.or even ready to pay Getty to have their images on their books!!!

So maybe it is time to look more into our category of so called ?gprofessional?h photographer to protect and to avoid other cases like ….

Let do it man!!! I think its a very good idea, kind of “seminar for poor and lonely photographers living in the land of the rising sun”

Need help to organize, yeah we will speak in TFW…hope to see you there after I hear the last bad news from the other post about fuckin Getty.
If not see you there I will call you!!

See ya!!

I’d definitely like to join and help out.

by Christopher Jue | 06 Mar 2007 03:03 | Tokyo, Japan |
Dave, Thomas, Chris. The first thing we need to do is let as many people as possible know about the event. Please contact any/all photogs you know in Tokyo / Japan and inform them that we are begining to plan the even. People who are interested in attending should either post here or send an email to me at nathanshananhan@mac.com.

Dave, don’t think I will be at TFW this time round but hope to see you soon.

by Nathan Shanahan | 06 Mar 2007 04:03 | Tokyo, Japan |
Nathan, Will keep an eye on this thread.
Thanks for getting back to me.

Way to got Nathan. Good stuff. Your get up and go is giving me a good kick up the arse.

by Paul Treacy | 07 Mar 2007 00:03 |
Hiya Nathan! As someone just starting out in the business I would be very keen to meet and learn what is good, bad and appropriate so that I don`t piss you guys off by being one of those that sell myself cheap through inexperience.
Cheers

Nathan, I’ll be into it. The 31st sounds good. Give me a mail if there is anything I can helpout with.

by Bruce Meyer | 07 Mar 2007 03:03 | Tokyo, Japan |
Jim, Damon – Glad to have the two of you onboard

Bruce – Looking forward to catching up again soon.

Will keep you all updated as plans futher unfold.

One thing we all need to do is try and spread the word outside of the lightstalkers community. I will be approaching a few other photographers I know who either don’t know of / use lightstlakers or don’t regularly check it to try and secure thier participation but if all of you could do likewise it would really help.

Basically the more people we can have come to this event the more we all stand to gain from it.

Friday night bump.

by Nathan Shanahan | 09 Mar 2007 10:03 | Tokyo, Japan |
Great idea Nathan. I would like to be at the meeting but I can only do it before the 27th of March or after the 1st of April. I hope it is possible to move the date for the meeting

by Androniki Christodoulou | 21 Mar 2007 06:03 | Tokyo, Japan |
Androniki, it would be really great to have you there, perhaps we can move the date if nobody else objects. Im busy the following week so if we change the date it might have to be the 14th of April. Would like to make it on a Sat night so as many people as possible can make it. Anyone object to moving the date back two weeks?

by Nathan Shanahan | 21 Mar 2007 09:03 | Tokyo, Japan |
No probs yes 14th sounds good
Damon

by Damon Coulter | 21 Mar 2007 10:03 | Tokyo, Japan |
Will make the time!
Any ideas about where in Tokyo? AM/PM? (not the konbini)

by Nick Benwell | 21 Mar 2007 14:03 | Nagoya, Japan |
Great Nathan. Thanks.. I can meet you all on the 14th. As for a meeting place, lets find something not too far from everyone. I live near Meguro.

by Androniki Christodoulou | 21 Mar 2007 15:03 | Tokyo, Japan |
Well all dates are dificult to be right for everyone,I will leave to spain on 4th so….im sorry guys.
I would like to assist but …maybe can record it or….make a word document with all the things you speak about…or maybe I have to wait until the next セミナア
take care guys!!

by David Coll Blanco | 21 Mar 2007 15:03 | Tokyo, Japan |
Arghhh I knew I was going to get myself in trouble trying to organise photographers to all be available on the same day. Do we do this? Two meetings, one on the 31st and one two weeks later on the 14th so that people who cant make one will be able to attend the other.

by Nathan Shanahan | 21 Mar 2007 17:03 (ed. Mar 21 2007) | Tokyo, Japan |
Good to know that enough people are busy enough to not make a certain date. That has to be good for us.
Thanks for organizing it all Nathan anyway “Gambate”, see you on the 31st somewhere central I guess and if the drinks are good maybe the 14th too. I am unfortunately not as busy (photography wise) as I`d like to be. :)

by Damon Coulter | 22 Mar 2007 02:03 | Tokyo, Japan |
Sound good for me If we make two meetings.
Ok for the 31March.
Nathan where we should meet??

by David Coll Blanco | 23 Mar 2007 04:03 | Tokyo, Japan |
Ok since it looks like our initial meeting is going to be in right at the peak of the cherry blossom bloom how about we combine into a hanami party at the same time. My preference would be to meet at NakaMeguro station (Toyoko and Hibiya lines) and if the weather holds then we can try and make some room for outselves in the park along the river right next to the station. Otherwise we could do Yoyogi Park? This Saturday night, 3/31 7pm.

If you have any other suggestions please feel free to post them here and we can decide together.

by Nathan Shanahan | 25 Mar 2007 13:03 | Tokyo, Japan |
Night time in the park?? Scary!!!??

Maybe its better to make it earlier Nathan, we can get drunk also at 12 h morning…sorry this is not the purpose of the meeting.
Also thinking if there is anyone from outside tokyo and must take the last train home…
Let post here during this week the time its better for all, dont you think??

Keep in touch.

by David Coll Blanco | 25 Mar 2007 14:03 | Tokyo, Japan |
Damn, I wish this idea had come into the light a little sooner. I’ve been trawling for face to face advice from pros for awhile. But, I have a flight booked out of Tokyo on Thursday.

Please, put somebody on taking minutes, and share on the forum whatever ideas and wisdoms come from the conversation.

Jumping into this passion is scary when so much of the ground seems to be shifting out from under so many photographers.

Be back in a year – hope there’s an anniversary meeting. Or that photography has become a fair paying, viable profession in the interim.

by Harold Godsoe | 26 Mar 2007 03:03 | Tokyo, Japan |
Guys, let’s confirm, so are we all set for Saturday at 7pm? Yoyogi?

by Tomas Reyes | 26 Mar 2007 16:03 | Houston, United States |
Hi there. It looks as most of you can meet on the 31st. I hope that the second meeting on the 14th will also have it’s participants :-). I am sorry I can not be with you on the 31st. Have a great time and have a drink for me too. Cheers!

by Androniki Christodoulou | 26 Mar 2007 17:03 | Tokyo, Japan |
Naka Meguro? Yoyogi?
Hanami party sounds like a good idea. Hope it`s warm!
So 7pm ok
Can we confirm the place?
And bring your own I guess.

Looking forward to meeting you all

Damon

by Damon Coulter | 26 Mar 2007 22:03 | Tokyo, Japan |
A little earlier will be better. In the afternoon as Dave suggested. Naka Mueguro sounds sweet.

by Bruce Meyer | 27 Mar 2007 01:03 | Tokyo, Japan |
Problem is earlier in the afternoon is going to be impossible for me. I’ve got a gig on over the weekend ( that just came in ) and we’re prelighting on Saturday. Hope to be finished in time to be back for 7pm but still a little unsure.

by Nathan Shanahan | 27 Mar 2007 14:03 | Tokyo, Japan |
7 is sweet then . Look forward to seeing ya all.

by Bruce Meyer | 27 Mar 2007 15:03 | Tokyo, Japan |
Same here – is there a meeting point set?

by Jim O'Connell | 29 Mar 2007 05:03 | Tokyo, Japan |
The Park in Nakameguro. If we can get a spot.
Exit the station.

Cross the road.

Walk down the right hand side of the pachinko

Turn right at the Italian cafe

Walk down the street.

Its on your left

Hi all…

Ric Kasnoff, Pro Photographer ( http://www.ecophoto.com ), certified Apple and Adobe Trainer and Senior Director of Professional Imaging for Digital Railroad here…

I produce and present all of DRR’s Educational Seminars which include some of the things you’re discussing here…How to make a living doing what we all love to do…others we are currently presenting or have presented are “Breaking into the Marketplace”, “Digital Workflow Best Practices” and “Going Pro”

Bottom line is I will be in Japan from 16 Nov to 2 Dec on vacation and would be more than happy to take a break (from the mad dash of a 1st time visit) and present one of the seminars to this group if there’s interest…all you would need to provide is the space and a projector…(no…I don’t think the park would do ;-p)…if enough are interested to actually put this together then I’ll get DRR to cover my incidentals…

Let me know…Ric

It sounds really interesting Ric.
Let s make a mini seminar in Tokyo when you come.
Keep in touch.

by David Coll Blanco | 16 Aug 2007 08:08 | Tokyo, Japan |
I have a contact in the Apple store in Ginza, perhaps they will allow us use of the cinema? Otherwise SuperDelux may also allow us use of their space if we can convince them we’ll have a fair number of folks coming.

by Nathan Shanahan | 16 Aug 2007 08:08 | Tokyo, Japan |
Back to the seminar idea…

I have a few nights in Tokyo available at either end of my trip

Sunday the 18th of November and either Thurs the 29th, Fri the 30th or Sat 1st of Dec…

would prefer the 1st evening so I can pump you all for shot ideas/locations while I’m there but either can work for me…

If we can put this together I can bring some goodies from Digital Railroad as well as Adobe and Embassy Pro Books as an added incentive to attend…

Would someone like to take ownership of putting it together on that end and getting the word out?

Let me know…Ric
