Building websites 101

Hey everyone – I am wondering if anyone has a super simple, but effective, method of building a site. I had mine done by a friend with limited knowledge of dreamweaver, and I have such trouble updating it that I simply don’t…which is really just bad advertising! I have heard that iWeb is good, but as I don’t have iLife 06, I would have to buy it.. Any advice on a good, simple, free, alternative?
If anyone has any suggestions I would be much obliged.
