Total Field Production Solution
|
Can anyone please recommend a hardware software equipment configuration that would provide a total solution enabling me to record HD Video and sound, edit in in the field and upload it to a server via a satellite phone hook up? I need to be on the road in remote parts of Africa shooting high-res photo/video footage with sound (ambient sound and group interviews) back-up and rough edit the material in the field, and immediately upload via a satellite link to a backbone server in Europe or N.America. Power is also a concern. Solar maybe? Thank You. Eric.

Why HD? All that extra bandwidth…or you’d have to down convert it before sending it, wouldn’t ya? wouldnt it just be easier shootin’ SD? Just curious…

Good poit Sion – Thanks. I was thinking HD because after uploading the content to a web server I would like to be able to exercise the options of distributing the material via DVD and broadcast media… Eric.

Eric: did you find a decent solution? Id like to know as well – Andrew

Cant you just use Avid or Final Cut on a laptop, then compress it as a Quicktime or WMV and transmit using a BGAN?
Is it for TV or the net? I’ve been doing a bit of video myself so this post has come back co-incidentally as I’ve been mulling over similar issues myself.
Obviously the HD would have to wait till you got back…
HD tape is pricey but you could maybe try one of those new Firestore hard drive recorders for DV….

this is my kit for dv and hdv uplinks: Sony Z1U HDVMac G4 12” Final Cut Express HD Bgan or livewire. (double livewire sat phones for lives) if it’s for broadcast, you don’t need HD, only a few networks provide HD, and the files are much bigger. i use the same system for stills, ocasionally an iridium if i really need to carry less. G.
