Traveling with digital camera

If you travel for a while without a laptop, how do you empty your memory cards? What is the most practical way? Any suggestion will be gratefully appreciated, thanks in advance!

The industry standard at the moment is the Hyperdrive ( link). They come in a variety of HD sizes and work on regular AA batteries. They are made of aluminum and feel very solid.

i recently bought a wolverine, which someone on LS recommended, i have used it on one extended trip and so far it has worked great,i like it because it has a screen to view the photos, and also you can use it as an mp3 player and audio recorder.

probably chiara understand very well Leila :-)

It’s not really her fault. This forum is so damn unresponsive at times you can’t tell whether your message got posted or not, hence the repeated clicking. But I do wish people would check back and delete their redundant messages.

yes, for sure Aleph.. It was only a joke.. best

I have a CompactDrive and it works just fine! No screen (so cheaper than most) but pretty simple to use: just plug the card and turn it on and the download begins. It only failed once because I used it as an external hard drive (for lack of a real one when my computer needed some repair..); it is only made for downloading cards! But you can also check the archives, I think there was a discussion on that topic not long ago. Yannis

See it just happend to me. I clicked the post reply button and nothing happend so I thought it didn’t work, but it apparently did!
P.S. The compactdrive is the same as the hyperdrive, only not distributed by the same company…
|
I use either my ipod direct to camera, or if available on location I can also use a local camera shop to put the shots on DVD.

“It only failed once because I used it as an external hard drive (for lack of a real one when my computer needed some repair..); it is only made for downloading cards!”
You can use the Hyperdrive / Compactdrive as an external HD. It hooks up via USB. The device is, in fact, a laptop HD mounted in a case with card-reading interface. You can swap on the HD inside yourself, if you ever want more storage space.

So Preston have you ever tried to download something other than image files? Because when I did that it worked just as I thought it would, but later I tried to download a compactflash into it and «error message» number 12 (the memory card is not compatible)! I have always used the same cards and until then I never had any problems!

if your in england, jacobs photographers are doing a 40 gb jobo, no image screen but basic 4 transfer screen, but for a 100 pounds seems like a good deal, been told there pretty stable and i just started using myself and seems to make life easy.

Chiara,
I have been using an Epson P-2000 thingy for an few months now. It’s a sort of HD with an excellent 3,8 ” display. There are two slots, one for CF cards an one for SD cards. It’s quite handy: whenever your filled up a card, just plug it in the slot and let the thingy copy your fils onto its HD, while you continue shooting with a second card. Downsides: it’s a bit slow in copying the files (but not much slower than a G5 copying RAW’s from a card). And it needs to recharged once in a while with it’s AC adapter- other than Hyperdrives which work with AA batteries that you’ll find anywhere in the world. But the battery will last you long enough to go shoot for a couple of days without recharging. You can also use it as an ultra bulky MP3 player, but that’ll eat your batterypower away in no time… It’s availabe in 40Gb and 80Gb. link: http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/consumer/consDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&oid=49164278
good luck,
ciao, T

Chiara, I use the Hyperdrive and like the flexibility of being able to use disposable batteries when necessary. Also, I click the “Post repy” button for LS posts as many times as I like.
|
Thanks everyone, I think i like the hyperdrive but shame it does not have a screen….. Do you guys travel with a couple of those just in case…? mmmmmmmmmmmm I wonder how many times should I press “post reply”........?!

chiara,,,, get as many as you can… and make as many back ups as you can… i recently left a hard drive in safety before returning back to more sketchy shit.. and that ended up being the only surviving information…... compared to the work … hard drives cost nothig…. i use smart disk.. 20 gb go for like 100 USD…. i reckon two is best.. always want two back ups.. and depending on where your going.. squirrellng one away in a safe place is not a bad idea at all….... erik: careful with ipod… read on other posts.. these things will eat you!!

I use an Archos AV400 with an 80 gig drive. It also acts as a multimedia player when I’m on the plane.

Yannis, I use a hyperdirve too, and once goit the error 12 message ( on assignment of course). I had to reformat the drive, and then it worked again.
