Tufts seeks a photog
|
The Photography Department is a university-wide resource that provides three primary services:
Populating with stock photography and maintaining an online library of images that reflect the Tufts brand and that are available to the Tufts community as well as approved external vendors. Operating a photo assignment service that processes requests for staff or freelance photographers to shoot events, print or web project images, faculty/staff profiles, or images needed by departments, divisions or any official Tufts organizations for a range of purposes. Setting the photographic vision and style in support of the Tufts visual identity as directed by university design and by working with colleagues from all university communications departments.
The department has two full-time (or equivalent) staff who both shoot and handle the operational needs of the library and the photo assignment service, as well as one half-time administrative support position who is the primary scheduler for the assignment service. The department is expected to provide the university photography at below market rates and to manage a chargeback system that offsets some of its operational budget needs.
The University Photographer is first and foremost an excellent and experienced photographer with a style suited to the varied needs of Tufts environment that includes three campuses, both urban and rural, and its seven graduate and undergraduate schools including professional health sciences, arts and sciences and engineering. The University Photographer must have the flexibility and creativity to capture the richness of these venues in innovative ways that portray Tufts entrepreneurial spirit.
The University Photographer will be expected to spend about 50% of his/her time shooting; she/he must possess the ability to shoot in a range of circumstances including labs, hospitals and the farm settings of our veterinary school. In addition, she/he must be a true team player who has experience in a collaborative environment. The University Photographer will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the department, including supervision of its staff, its chargeback system, the assignment service, and its budget.
In consultation with communications colleagues and/or the Vice President for University Relations, the University Photographer determines what kinds of projects should be given priority by the department as well as what kinds of equipment are purchased and contributes to establishing the department’s budget. He/she manages the photo assignment system that processes more than 300 assignments per year with staff and freelance resources.
The University Photographer must be accustomed to taking art direction and will work closely with the universitys editorial design director and senior art director for print to help create a visual identity that differentiates Tufts from its peers.
Basic Requirements: Bachelors degree and five plus (5+) years of experience are required Must be able to use Photoshop and other photo software as well as Excel — and be willing to learn new database software for the photo library Travel for some photo assignments is expected Preferred Qualifications: A Master’s degree or other advanced training; experience in either a design firm, ad agency or similar education communications department setting; and management experience.
Special Work Schedules: Working overtime, evenings and weekends will occur as events and assignments dictate.

Surely if they’re actively seeking candidates from “diverse backgrounds”, that’s not exactly equal opportunities is it?

That is a very scary job description and kind of funny. Maybe a robot with a camera could apply? Ha!

A culturally diverse robot…

I love how the people who contribute the least to this forum have the most to complain about.
When was the last time anyone other than myself who has commented on this thread posted a job?
Amy, organizations post the EOE diversity statement because our elite institutions (and yours by the way) don’t represent the racial ethnic or gender balance that exist. If I hear another person say reverse racism I will scream. Trying to actively balance the discriminatory atmosphere which is built into our system is not somehow disadvantaging those who already have unfair advantages (read: the ignorant fools some of them found right here who insist otherwise).
So I won’t be posting any more jobs, grants or fellowships. Not simply because of what I have found on this thread but several others. Erica, Youme and other can feel free to do their part but for me what started as an attempt to help my fellow photogs has devolved into an annoying pity fest.

Damaso…You sound like any comments here have something to do with your great work in listing these opportunities. I think I’m safe in saying that they do not.
In this particular case, the requirements and tone of the post seem over the top and would probably scare off 95% of most pros. Did anyone really read the wording in this post? An astronaut would probably say “no thanks, I’d rather go to the moon.” :) The same can be said of comments on LS regarding photo contests, photo “sharing”, and blatant copyright grabs.
Too bad that more newbie PJ types are not applying for and accepting jobs that you’ve posted AND then posting their appreciation to you and LS for the information. That would be productive.
SOooo…again… keep up the good work!
Cheers, G.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to cause any offence. My post was just supposed to be a lighthearted comment on the contradiction in terms with regards to the word “equal”. I didn’t say it was reverse racism, it was just a comment on the semantic contradiction. Again, sorry if I have upset you.

I don’t see what is so different in these requirements as any other posting for a photographer … except there is NO MENTION of multimedia, no requirement that the photographer must have their own gear and supply transportation. Did anyone bother to check that it starts with four weeks vacation among other benefits?
Quoting “In consultation with communications colleagues and/or the Vice President for University Relations, the University Photographer determines what kinds of projects should be given priority by the department as well as what kinds of equipment are purchased and contributes to establishing the department’s budget.”
When is the last time you saw any of that in a job description?
Open your eyes … and keep up the posting Damaso!

I applied for it when I saw it posted. thanks for posting it, among the many other that are posted. When I see postings, I either apply (though, not to many since I’m not interested in a newspaper job) or forward it to friends that are also looking for work… so these posts certainly don’t fall on blind eyes.
I don’t know many staff positions that don’t own the rights to your work. As far as staff positions go, this one would be pretty good. And at least at a university, you won’t have to sweat over layoffs. The benefits are also better, more vacation and tuition benefits. I can also guess a better atmosphere than at a newspaper, which is full of disgruntled photogs.
