Hello all, for those who had asked about UNICEF POY – the following LS members can nominate for the award. please contact one of them with a sample of your work. Thanks to to Jake,Stephen,Sherri,Peter,James,Sumit,Patrick, and Angela for taking this on.

The deadline for submissions is October 31, 2008 (date of delivery).

LS nominators:

Following the link of Hughes I found some general information about the procedures, but nothing specific regarding the 2008 award and entrance details.

Somewhere in those (useful anyway) information there is this paragraph:

"The photographers submit five to ten photos that demonstrate a high level of photography and visually interpret living situations of children. There is no possibility to enter the contest without nomination.

What exactly means the sentence that i bolded?

What a photographer then should do?

Is this a simple restriction?

One more question..:

Is it important to know something regarding the size of the photos we are about to send, or is indifferent?

by Jonnek Jonneksson | 21 Aug 2008 13:08 | Athens, Greece |
Hi All, I just e-mailed the rest of my colleagues and so am waiting on a consensus re file size, but as it seems there are already questions about it I’m proposing that files, if there are more than one, be sent in zipped folders and that individual image size be jpeg on 8 quality at 200 dpi at 1600px at their longest. Also, please include your name and contact details in the file info section. For those sending to James you might want to double-check with him as he’s on the road and away from broadband and so a smaller file size might be more suitable for him.

by Jake Price | 21 Aug 2008 16:08 (ed. Aug 21 2008) | NYC, United States |
Hi Aytac,

Sorry for not replying earlier. I was on vacation and took a few days break from email… I’m not sure the answer to your question, but will check and get back to you.

by Peter van Agtmael | 22 Aug 2008 20:08 | Lenox, MA, United States |
Thanks, Teru. How does this nomination work? Do we submit our work to our friends and they will nominate us for UNICEF?

Can the people who want to send work from China, southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand can you please send it my pb@patrickbrownphoto.com. I would also like the body of work to be accompanied by, text, an introduction to the project – just a brief overview of the project. This is very important. Again it doesn’t have to be too big.

For sending images could you please keep the edit, very tight. The final out put for these images will have to be sent to Germany, it has been proposed that the file size must be: jpeg on 8 quality at 200 dpi at 1600px at their longest.

Any question please feel free to contact me

Regards

Patrick

Hi Jean,

You can send the series to me. I am crossing the
US border south to Mexico today but should be
reachable throughout that time with small gaps
in time, when I am out of areas with internet.

Please bear in mind what Patrick said when preparing the
series to be submitted:

I look forward to seeing what you have in mind.

James.

Hi Guys,

I don´t want to scrap it out with Patrick over
China, but that would be in the East Asia region.
Southeast Asia has a lot of stories already.

China, Japan and Korea (used to be) the Chinese
characters/kanji cultural block of East Asia.

Please send China stories to
james.delano@pep.ne.jp and
cc: to
jameswdelano@hotmail.com

Cheers,

James.

I just checked the definition of Southeast Asia. Here is the Wiki definition. While Southeast Asia has been influenced or occupied by China, China does not belong there, but to East Asia.

Hey Guy’s
Still looking for someone who knows how to get a hold of Stephen Ferry or who may take a submission for Bolivia S.A. I’m not ‘young’, but this would be my first submission in 20 years, that’s new isn’t it.
Thanks again

any one know Patrick Brown contact?
thank you

by Doddy Varonis | 29 Sep 2008 11:09 | yogyakarta, Indonesia |
Doddy, you need to see Patrick Brown`s post above for the e-mail address. Contrary to his post, however, his territory does not include China, which belongs to East Asia and if your photo subjects are shot in China, contact James Whitlow Delano.

by Tomoko Yamamoto | 29 Sep 2008 13:09 (ed. Sep 29 2008) | Baltimore, MD, United States |
what if my photo subject in Indonesia?

by Doddy Varonis | 29 Sep 2008 16:09 | yogyakarta, Indonesia |
According to the Wiki definition of Southeast Asia, Indonesia belongs to Southeast Asia and you need to contact Patrick Brown.

by Tomoko Yamamoto | 29 Sep 2008 21:09 | Baltimore, MD, United States |
Dear Patrick Brown
could i know your email? because i will send my image later.

by Ehrin Macksey | 12 Oct 2008 12:10 | Hanoi, Vietnam |
Hi all,
just one doubt. If I am based in Europe but I am submitting pictures I took in Australia, am I supposed to send the pictures to Sherri Dougherty (for Europe) or to
Patrick Brown (Australia)?

by Romina Marani | 12 Oct 2008 15:10 | Rome, Italy |
Romina, your pictures should go to a person who is nominating pictures shot in
Australia. It is the picture that counts, not your base. Therefore it should be Patrick Brown in your case.

Here is his e-mail address, pb@patrickbrownphoto.com, but before you send them, be sure to read his instructions in his post above.

by Tomoko Yamamoto | 12 Oct 2008 17:10 (ed. Oct 12 2008) | Baltimore, MD, United States |
Thank you very much, Tomoko.
r.

by Romina Marani | 12 Oct 2008 18:10 | Rome, Italy |
You are welcome, Romina, and best of luck to you, and everyone else who have submitted. The key seems to me that it is the UNICEF PHOTO of the year award in the title, but not the UNICEF Photographer of the Year award. That may be why they have set up regional nominators to select a series of images, not the image makers, in particular regions.
