Update from New Orleans

I have been really busy catching up on my own work after the New Orleans event, I wanted to thank everyone who attended.

Lori Wasselchuk, Alan Chin, Stanley Greene, Jeremy Lange, Karen Mullarkey, Chris Usher and Shelly Katz all did a great job here in mentoring, and basically saving my ass, as I was much too busy to do what I wanted to do which was really help the “students” (sorry for that phrase—we had a broad mix here.)

I don’t want to mention names, but I will single out a few people who I think deserve special recognition, Lorena Vashetti to start with who is a rising star in art photography. Lorena is from Venezuela and you will be hearing a lot about here. Kelly Lynn James was also a standout, joining her boyfriend Lance Rosenfield (is it OK to say that Lance?) as well as Matthew Hinton who is a stringer for the Times Picayune. I really didn’t realize how good Matthew was until this shoot. Watch out for him.

As far as the mentors and hangers on go, my friend Laurent Zylbermann really stood out with that full-frame Nikon that has a sensor on steroids, as well as Alan Chin, who got some exceptional access (yes, I arranged that) to both Comus and Rex. Stanley Greene also had some beautiful frames and its always nice to see Stanley here, he is one of us.

In any event, the news is that we will be back next year, with a producer so that I can be free to work with the participants AND there will be another workshop here in late August, dealing with much more serious issues, which is that state of New Orleans three years after the hurricane.

I will have details on this workshop next month, but I want to give LS the heads-up on this so you can make plans. I learned a lot from the Mardi Gras experience and this event will be leaner, meaner, and more to the point.

Finally a few of the photographers were not represented in the gallery show (everyones work was shown at the concluding slideshow,) and my public apologies for changing the format—initially I had wanted to have everyone represented, but do to space limitations and the cost of hanging the show, we went with the best images instead and a few people were left out.
Its not a reflection on anyone’s abilities and I have offered a generous discount on future events for anyone who felt slighted. I did give the impression on the website that everyone would be included (of course all the events were tagged with the usual caveat of being subject to change) and change they did.

Thanks for helping out Jeremy, I heard time and time again about how much the photographers got from working with you….

Thank you again Andy, and everyone who made it a really rich and crazy experience. I also just happened to notice Kael Alford missing from the list up there. Thank you for the time you spent and stories you shared.

For some reason the “edit” button is missing, I did neglect to mention Kael Alford, the event would not have been the same without her.
