just go for the tourist visa. as far as i know, there is only one foreign journalist who has been given a syrian press card in the last decade, and identifying yourself as a journalist will make for a time consuming headache.

that said, if you’re pictures are going to be published in a prominent publication soon after your trip to syria, i suggest that you talk to the ministry of information upon arrival. they don’t take kindly to people running around under their nose in the current tense political climate, and doing so could jeopardize future travel to syria. all in all though, simply apply for the usual tourist visa, and deal with the red tape once you get there if your story will eventually be seen by their people.

in terms of places to stay, there are many great options, though book in advance as summers tend to be busy. the high end is the four seasons, which usually has a rate of 145 US/night, and is quite nice. less expensive is the mamluk in the christian part of the old city. it’s quite beautiful and as far as i know, has wireless internet. i think it’s about 80-100 US/night. the haramain hostel is a great option when traveling on the cheap, and is a quick walk away from the old souk.

safe travels

My 2 cents…

Ciao, buon viaggio e buon lavoro

Grazie ema,
