Who uses a 1Ds Mark 11?

I’ve been using a Canon 5D for almost two years now and I absolutely love it. I shoot all documentary and rarely spot news or sports. My issue is the 5D has had some issues due to humidity in the region and I just can’t fully rely on it as my main camera. I know a dry box is a good idea but it’s too late. My question is has anyone here used both the Canon 5D and the 1Ds Mark 11 and compared files? I am strongly considering buying a used 1Ds Mark 11 and wanted to hear what people thought about it.
Thanks,
Justin

Hi Justin, i used the both cameras. The 1ds MII was for me more nervous than the 5D and more reliable. But it’s not the same weight. About the files, if you shoot around 100 to 400 iso the both are great!
But at high iso the 5D had better files ( 800is was very very good and better than the 1ds MII) but the 1DSMKII files at 800iso are good too.
And if you have Noise Ninja, the noise is invisible.
For me the advantage of the 5D is the weight and the low noise at high iso. But if you don’t care about it, the 1ds MkII is a very very good camera. Sealed, very nervous, and reliable. I remember that after a while my main body was the 1dsMII, and my 5d remain in my bag or i used it when i needed 2 bodies- 2 lens.
Well hope it help.
Best

I use the Mark II and a 30D. I’m don’t really care about noise, I shot with some old digitals for a long time, so the 30D at 3200 usually produces ok results for me. I notice noise on both cameras at about 1000 iso, but even on the highest settings the noise is tolerable for me. The Mark II is better, though. The Mark II is built very well and sealed, so it will hold up. The rubber eyepiece will fall off all the time, but I think all Canons have that problem. The Mark II is also GIANT, it’s a huge camera. Almost tall as my F3HP with a motor drive, and much thicker. It’s uncomfortable to wear around your neck for more than a few minutes. I like small bodies, so I shoot my 30D for almost everything, but the Mark II kicks the crap out of it for image quality and options. That Mark II is also pretty damn loud.

ive read that there’s a new 5d coming out in early june (now?) and apparently has better weather sealing than the first release; well it better for the price. i love the mark ii i use to shoot with for the newspaper i work at. love it. so when i was buying the 5d (what you have now) my main concern was sealing, oh and weight coz the mark ii is a brick. i think the 5d has slightly better image quality at higher iso but my newspaper eye can’t really tell the difference at 800 from 400, if that helps. if you’re in the tropics my god buy a camera that has good weather sealing. that would make me nervous. and if you can find a used mark ii, even better, if you don’t mind the weight, it’ll make your wrists stronger.

I shoot sports at 1600 ISO with my Mark II N and is really good. Also, I tried under the rain and works perfect!

I use two Canon 1D Mark II’s. Not the Ds, so file size is smaller, but build, ergonomics, etc are the same. Awesome camera, bigger and heavier yes- but pretty much totally bombproof. You get used to the size, no big deal. If the humidity and weather in the tropics are an issue, the Mark II is perhaps the best thing on the market for weather sealing. You can pick them up used for a great deals now as well. The new 5D ? Rumour has it that it is sealed, but only partially.

You guys are all wonderful for helping me out here, thank you!!! I don’t mind the size of the larger body, I just need full frame because I shoot all primes that are based around that sensor size. I might wait one more month and see what the news is on the new 5D , if any.
Thanks again everybody,
Justin

Wait Mr. Mott… Freelancers can only afford what is absolutely crucial dude! Price tag on that 1Ds=Loco!! Plus, you know that right after you buy it, the new 5D will come out, cuz thats how the world works!

I know what you mean for sure about the non-weather sealed 5D… sucks ass… love the cam to death, but yes… have taken it out in the rain once, and my shutter button still sticks… but… honestly… think about the stories you can do with the dough you would spend on the the 1Ds…. Patience my son!! :)
