Why are so many photogs based in Brooklyn, NY?

Wondering why so many LS’ers seem to be based in Brooklyn, New York. Is Brooklyn a new center of gravity for American photographers?

If Brooklyn was independent it would be the fourth largest city in America. Add to that the cheaper rents (compared to Manhattan) and the proximity to the media center of America and you have your answer.
Plus it’s super cool!

and its named after the son of a famous english footballer!

If photogs had incomes like investment bankers, they might live in Manhattan too. But, alas…....
|
temperament? I wouldn’t want to be in the city every day, but I want access.. i was able to get in to B&H for a mega shop yesterday, pick up a piece of mine from a gallery, and have time for a photo meeting..and then come home to sweet brooklyn.

Hey, no knocking the Bronx! The Yankees and me are both from there.

“Wondering why so many LS’ers seem to be based in Brooklyn, New York.”
It’s cheaper than Manhattan.
|
not just cheaper, but trees on the streets, fewer crowds except in awful hipster areas like williamsburg, easy to park a car and bike, great choice of restaurants and shops, is home to Coney Island, BAM, the Brooklyn Museum, the Botanic Garden, little Odessa in Brighton Beach, Chinatown in Bay Ridge, Greenwood Cemetary…to name just a few of the amazing places and institutions…
Finally, access to most of Manhattan south of Central Park is easier from most of Brooklyn than it is from Queens or the Bronx.
|
In short, Brooklyn remains a livable city where it is possible to be free from the madding crowds, whereas in the city the madding crowds are the norm. Most of Brooklyn remains a five story 19th century city, whereas Manhattan long ago had to go in the only direction open to it once the Harlem, Hudson, and East Rivers had been reached: straight up. Now if the Dodgers had stayed put, my father might never have left.
|
Some one said trees grow there. Did you ever wonder if there is a tree in Central Park that has never been urinated on by either a dog or man.
|
I can honestly say that I have never contemplated the ratio of of pee-free to non-pee-free trees in Central Park. I’ll get to that after this rerun of the A-Team.
|
I have a question. Did the guys on the A-Team ever actually hit someone they were shooting at? As I recall, they didnt, but my memory is getting old and hazy
|
Those special effects weren’t going to pay for themselves.

“anything but manhattan ;)))))”....you gotta be shttin’
“Despite Brooklyn’s lack of cachet compared to Manhattan, the funkier and more affordable spaces”....re: dumbo: what do you do if you want some milk or beer after 11pm?
“Hey, no knocking the Bronx! The Yankees and me are both from there.”...poor bastard, and the yanks a $200M afterthought
“not just cheaper, but trees on the streets, fewer crowds except….”...kansas is even cheaper, has more trees and fewer people
“Some one said trees grow there. Did you ever wonder…”....no
“I have a question. Did the guys on the A-Team ever actually hit someone they were shooting at? ”....no, i’ve even seen a helicopter fly into a mountain, burst into flames, tumble down the cliffs and land on a rocky beach. everyone climbed out albeit a bit shaken up but still on their feet.
|
“re: dumbo: what do you do if you want some milk or beer after 11pm?” ...i try to be in bed by then, but since you asked, if i really had to, no excuses, i’d open the stupid fridge and get some. why? you’re not thinking of mixing, are you? bilk & dumbo be mad combo.

frosty beershakes in the middle of the night
|
Scratching my stupid head in disbelief, beershakes do exist. But you need cream, not milk for ‘em. Organic, naturally, no? That may be a problem finding, after 11pm.
|
Ed, when was the last time you were in Brooklyn? 1973?
Most of the more gentrified neighborhoods have “Korean delis” that are open late or 24 hours. In other neighborhoods, similar stores are called “bodegas.”
The giant Pathmark supermarket at the Smith-9th Street stop is 24 hours, to name just the one closest to me. Reliable, if unglamorous, all night diners are on Smith Street and also on 5th and 7th Avenues in Park Slope. I’m not even mentioning all the places in Williamsburg and Greenpoint, never mind deeper into the borough.
Even Dumbo, by the way, does have a large 24 hour Korean deli and several bars open until 4 am if you want beer and milk.
And for the late night Manhattan crowd, be warned: Florent in the meat packing district will be closing its doors forever at the end of the month. The times they do a-change.
But as Thomas Wolfe wrote, “Only the dead know Brooklyn…It’d take a guy a lifetime to know Brooklyn t’roo an’ t’roo. An’ even den, yuh wouldn’t know it all.”
