Why Photo District News Sucks...

I’ve been a subscriber to Photo District News for twenty years or so. I’ve also been a registered user on their website for a few years, which allows me access to their “premium” online content.

Now, for some reason my old login info doesn’t work. I also tried to login with my subscription number and zip code and the site tells me the subscription number doesn’t exist.

I sent a message to the magazine via the supplied email address along with a screen grab of the error message on Saturday.

I’ve gotten no response and I’m still unable to login.

I know it’s only been a couple of days, but at $65 a year this is a premium subscription rate and the information the magazine contains may directly effect my business decisions. So I think it’s OK to expect quick results when a problem comes up (or at least a response to my email).

So my question is, Does Photo District News suck, and if so why?

Thanks,
Ken

Yes and this is just one example. Mostly it seems like a lot of the folks there are out of touch with what it is like to actually be a photographer…

It’s dump on PDN time! Oh, goody!

It took me forever to get off their publisher’s junk mail list, despite repeated opt-outs. I had to finally threaten them with reporting their practices to the FTC’s spam-mail enforcers before they responded. Even then, I still get occasional spam from the publisher.

The mag itself seems rather routine for a trade rag. I realize those types of publications usually can’t recruit top reporters and editors, and they are often compromised in their journalism by the need to be nice to the industry whose subscriptions and ads they rely upon. But on the other hand, there are rags which are MUCH worse.

Kenneth,

This also has happened to me. I called the subscription service and have still not heard back from them. Annoying.

Try your username and password in all CAPS. It sounds silly I know, but the same thing happened to me, and when I finally spoke with someone about it (after days of waiting), they made it sound like the username and passwd had always been in caps and I was nuts. No use arguing with a fool – I just went with it and it worked. Good luck.

My subscription ended in February. I have renewed but the next issue won’t come until April and when I spoke with the subscription service they said my access to the website won’t renew until April as well. You would think I would have access to the website as soon as I paid, but no.

We’d like to uphold our status as Not the Worst Rag. So if you have a PDN subscription problem that circulation hasn’t resolved for you, please send your e-mail address to me and I’ll forward it to Holly Hughes, who will make sure you are taken care of. thanks, David Walker, PDN dwalker100@comcast.net

I’ve just been in contact with both David Walker and Holly Hughes of PDN. Holly has promised to personally fix this situation.

So I’m very appreciative of their response.

As I mentioned to Holly, I do use PDN’s online content to (try to) stay informed about the photography world on a weekly basis.

It’s exciting that we have all of these different tools, PDN, Lightstalkers, Foto8, various blogs like APE and BAGnewsnotes to communicate with, educate and to a small degree self-regulate ourselves at this time.

Yes, Ken, if we don’t really mean anything to anybody, we can at least be a big deal among ourselves…..what is APE?

Yes, they fixed my access too! That blog by Rob Haggart is a damn good resource—I found it a week ago!
