WorkShopAsia Helps Local Photographers
|
I just want to share with you all some words from my fixer in Nepal, who recently attended, free of charge, one of WorkShopAsia weeks in Kathmandu. He earns $50 a month approx and shoots where and when he can, so can’t afford this sort of class normally.
This was an amazing opportunity for him to work with some of the best photographers from around the world. His enthusiasm and freshness is wonderful to read, it jumps out at you through his words. He has the passion we all remember and hopefully many of us still have.
If you want a great experience and have the money, please think about signing up to the next workshop in Siem Reap, Cambodia on July 1st-8th. These guys really do help and through the workshop you have the chance to help and also learn from, some local photographers who otherwise would not be given this opportunity.

From my Fixer……
This has changed my life. This experience will last me more than a lifetime. What I have done here and what I have learned here is, as they say, beyond words, beyond all expectation. It has opened up my mind and widened my vision. I am getting so many ideas, seeing so many stories. In fact everywhere I go I see a documentary.
Yes, I was photojournalist even before this workshop, but now I feel what I saw then and did at that time…. it was only just the beginning.
There so much to do, so much to learn.
When I joined the workshop I was sort of apprehensive. So many professional photojournalists from around the world, as students and well known photojournalists as teachers. And here I was a small person from a small place would they accepted me, would they even give a damn. I was afraid that I would be out of place in this stellar congregation.
But I was wrong. They were very open and helpful.
Steve helped me a lot. I liked his way of describing the subject in very creative style. I used to take my work and show it to him, he guided me very well. Jack and Stephen were very also extremely positive. Excellent teachers.
The theme of the workshop of was HOPE. I choose to portray the life of porters in and around the Basantapur durbar square, the center of the capital. I was attached the photos that where chosen for the final presentation. They were edited by Steve, Stephen and finally by Jack. You’ll happy to know that your recommendation did not go to waste. All the time that I worked it was always in my mind that I have to live up to your word. When they announced one of my pictures as the best picture of the workshop. I felt that I have done it.
Again thank you. You all have given me a new HOPE.

marcus, the words of your fixer are very touching. could you please hope to africa too, whats the possibility of bringing this workshop to nairobi, kenya?
|
Marcus, thanks for your post, it was a great pleasure to have S at the workshop in Kathmandu and he should be very proud of the work he produced, we were. We’re thrilled he found it worthwhile, because we do try to reserve places for at least a couple of local photographers in every WorkShopAsia destination – this not only gives them a little more exposure to international photojournalism, but everyone at the workshops can also learn so much from them about the local area and culture, so it’s often a great and lively exchange.
George, funnily enough we are hoping to do a spinoff WorkShopAfrica in the not too distant future and Nairobi is very likely to be one of the locations, probably in 2008. I worked all over Africa for 10 years and still miss it. We’ll keep you posted, or drop me a line on jack@workshopasia.com or send a pms any time.
Cheers, Jack

Marcus, I just took a look at workshopasia’s website. Got interested and thought I did write to them to ask for more details and an application form. The email address info@workshopasia.com didn’t work. Do you happen to know how I can get touch with them?
