Wow!!! we are turning into a camera forum

Check out the latest …………. whatever……………. what a shit of a course we are on……,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, another goddamn camera forum

by Imants at Tue Jul 01 10:33:46 UTC 2008 (ed. Jul 5 2008) The Boneyard, Australia | Bookmark this | Digg this |

Well, if talking about cameras is stupid, why not start a conversation about whatever it is you find smart?

by Stupid Photographer | 01 Jul 2008 11:07 | Holy Smokes, Holy See |
Twas always thus, Imants. At least its Nikons at the moment rather than Leicas :-)
It’s not a new camera I need right now-just more bloody clients!!

by John Watts-Robertson | 01 Jul 2008 11:07 | somewhere, United Kingdom |
More clients would be good. Agreed.

Imants, traffic here at LS has slowed greatly in the last months so it might appear that cameras have taken over some but they have not. Anyway, talk of this new camera from Nikon is entirely valid for a place like this. Of course it is.

One of the things photographers naturally talk about are cameras, especially now that there’s something new and something anticipated that people are excited about at the moment. I don’t think this place has necessarily turned into a nerdy camera forum. I, for one, still watch out for pithy posts and alerts like “Jessica Alba Nude on Spanish Beach.”

And if you dont want to talk about cameras, I have a new gallery up here, complete with musical accompaniment at

Comments are welcome, up to and including I should do something else with my time.

by Akaky | 01 Jul 2008 14:07 | New York , United States |
My first stupid thought is that you’d benefit from understanding the Zone System.

by Stupid Photographer | 01 Jul 2008 15:07 (ed. Jul 1 2008) | Holy Smokes, Holy See |
Stoop’s right-so here is a link to help you….. http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/roadusers/congestioncharge/whereandwhen/

By the way, Akaky-the Zenit Photosniper-is it any good?

by John Watts-Robertson | 01 Jul 2008 17:07 (ed. Jul 1 2008) | somewhere, United Kingdom |
LOL Imants, yes LS is a victim of its own success. Everybody reads it and as much as I like candor, I am not going to shoot myself in the head either. There are many things I would love to say over a beer that I can’t say on Lightstalkers….

by Andy Levin | 01 Jul 2008 18:07 | New Orleans, United States |
Stoop, I tried to figure the Zone out; I even checked Adams’ books out of the local library. The Zone System is one of those things, like algebra, asparagus, and rooting for the Red Sox, that just goes right by me. I got ten pages into the book and said, screw it, I’ll shoot the pic and hope for the best.

JR, I dont know if the Photosniper is good or not, but I think what I said about the Fulgugator (?) is equally true here: this is not a device you would choose to use in a large crowd thick with security people, as you are merely giving them the opportunity to show their employers how well-trained they are. This does nothing for you, of course, or for your liver, after the coroner is done pulling lead out of it.

by Akaky | 01 Jul 2008 18:07 | New York , United States |
Akaky, until someone comes up with the idiot/stoopid’s guide to the zone system, you can check the simplified zone system:
http://simplifiedzonesystem.com/
Specifically designed for folks who can only count up to 5.
Author claims it can be understood by 9th graders.

by Olivier Boulot | 01 Jul 2008 18:07 | Paris, France |
The way I see it is if you aren’t saying anything, you can’t blame someone else for talking. Everyone is waiting to take notes from your wisdom. And I guess the next time you’re looking to buy a new camera, you’re not going to look anywhere to see what people are saying about it. Shame on these plebeians.

by Edward Linsmier | 01 Jul 2008 19:07 | Coconut Creek, Fla., United States |
Olivier, this is the USA we’re talking about here: most 9th graders here in this our Great Republic are still groping their way towards the concept of zero and only really grasp the idea when the teacher tells them that this particular number accurately describes most of the math class’ chances of getting laid on Saturday night.

by Akaky | 01 Jul 2008 19:07 | New York , United States |
are the sheep full frame?

by Brian David Stevens | 01 Jul 2008 19:07 | London, United Kingdom |
Not only are the sheep FF, but they come zith a choice of red or yellow garter belt in the box!!!

by Olivier Boulot | 01 Jul 2008 20:07 | Paris, France |

by Stefan Rohner | 01 Jul 2008 20:07 | Ibiza, Spain |
I was kind of hoping a few more people would see what Imant’s trying say. He might not have said it in the best of ways, and as John and Paul said, clients are what allow us to do what we believe in (if only we see more posts about getting clients), and Imants, you might just be looking at Lightstalkers at a bad time, it’s not all camera talk.

I am sure it can get better, but take the time to look around, and you will see people talking about making changes, about the media, code of conduct, surviving in the business, helping out up and coming photographers, fixers, interpreters (would definitely want to see more of that), and so on and so forth. If you don’t want “another goddam camera forum” (and I agree), tell us what you’d like to see more of.

Offering to sell a couple of sheep isn’t going to help bring Lightstalkers to a better course.

by Samson Yee | 01 Jul 2008 20:07 | Hong Kong, Hong Kong |
stefan ‘happy father’ – i thought you liked kids? so he hangs out the window while you drive with one hand and photograph him with the other … and i bet you were wearing a seat belt. in london you’d have the social services knocking on your door.

(only joking, great shot!)

by david sutherland | 01 Jul 2008 20:07 (ed. Jul 1 2008) | London, United Kingdom |
Think it is bad now wait until the new canon model comes out….

As for this becoming a “camera forum” well we are photographers not farmers…although there might be a farmer here wondering why we are not chatting up the latest John Deer offering.

" ….and rooting for the Red Sox…"

phhht, yankees suck.

++++++

On the first day of school a first grade teacher explains to her class that she is a Yankees fan. She asks her students to raise their hands if they, too, are Yankees fans.

Wanting to impress their teacher, everyone in the class raises their hand except one little girl.

The teacher looks at the girl with surprise and says, “Janie, why didn’t you raise your hand?”

“Because I’m not a Yankees fan,” she replied.

The teacher, still shocked, asked, “Well, if you are not a Yankees fan, then who are you a fan of?”

“I am a Red Sox fan, and proud of it,” Janie replied.

The teacher could not believe her ears. “Janie, why pray tell are you a Red Sox fan?”

“Because my mom is a Red Sox fan, and my dad is Red Sox fan, so I’m a Red Sox fan too!”

“Well,” said the teacher in a obviously annoyed tone, “that is no reason for you to be a Red Sox fan. You don’t have to be just like your parents all of the time. What if your mom were an idiot and your dad were a moron, what would you be then?”

“Then,” Janie smiled, “I’d be a Yankees fan.”

Of course! And that will be followed by the “Please..please Canon don’t give us the 5DII with a pop-up flash” Thread.

Anyone tried the Leica M8? Is it any good.

by Mark Seager | 02 Jul 2008 16:07 (ed. Jul 2 2008) | London, United Kingdom |
I’ll take a Seager fist fight over a Žižek polemic, any day. Because Seager wields the camera every single day, while Žižek only dreams about it, brandishing a stupid pen.

If one really must read to understand, Milan Kundera and his Unbearable Lightness of Being is a better start than anything by Žižek. Skip the Unbearable movie.

by Stupid Photographer | 02 Jul 2008 17:07 (ed. Jul 2 2008) | Holy Smokes, Holy See |
Ed, smartass kids are a wonderful thing, I think. I also think not enough of them are fed to starving wombats to make me happy.

Mark, the general consensus of opinion seems to be that the Leica M8 is a wonderful camera, except when it isnt. Its ability to
spread peanut butter, both creamy and chunky, is unrivaled by any other digital rangefinder on the market today.

Stoop, the Zone is still Greek to me. On the other hand, I liked the unbearable lightness of being. Never saw the flick, though.

by Akaky | 02 Jul 2008 18:07 | New York , United States |
Well, the Unbearable Lightness is more important than the Zone System, any day. Except to stupid photographers, maybe.

what a brilliant and hilarious thread….by the way, ole Mr. Testones has been a favorite and staple of my (his workshops are de rigeur for SPA members) get-out-of-depression funk for almost 2 years now :))))))…

and godalmight, i LOVE LOVE http://unphotographable.com !!!..THNAK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! :))))…ONE AND ALL

and the frickin’ Zone System, i think WAS THE REASON i switched from photography to painting when i was in my university days and took a intro-to-photo class…now, 20 years later, i cant believe it’s reared its ugly, treacle-tinted head ;)))….

ok, this thread, and i guess what brother Imants is lamenting, is that no one, no one for like a year has posted Joyce…so, without much further ado, James Joyce on the new system that is all the rage:

“It may not or maybe a no concern of the Guinnesses but.
That the fright of his light in tribalbalbutience hides aback in
the doom of the balk of the deaf but that the height of his life
from a bride’s eye stammpunct is when a man that means a moun-
tain barring his distance wades a lymph that plays the lazy win-
ning she likes yet that pride that bogs the party begs the glory of
a wake while the scheme is like your rumba round me garden,
allatheses, with perhelps the prop of a prompt to them, was now
or never in Etheria Deserta, as in Grander Suburbia, with Finn-
fannfawners, ruric or cospolite, for much or moment indispute.
Whyfor had they, it is Hiberio-Miletians and Argloe-Noremen,
donated him, birth of an otion that was breeder to sweatoslaves,
as mysterbolder, forced in their waste, and as for Ibdullin what of
Himana, that their tolvtubular high fidelity daildialler, as modern
as tomorrow afternoon and in appearance up to the minute (hear- ing that anybody in that ruad duchy of Wollinstown schemed 16
to halve the wrong type of date) equipped with supershielded um-
brella antennas for distance getting and connected by the magnetic
links of a Bellini-Tosti coupling system with a vitaltone speaker,
capable of capturing skybuddies, harbour craft emittences, key
clickings, vaticum cleaners, due to woman formed mobile or
man made static and bawling the whowle hamshack and wobble
down in an eliminium sounds pound so as to serve him up a mele-
goturny marygoraumd, eclectrically filtered for allirish earths and …”

—FW, Joyce…

PS. STEFAN: she looks so happy and so wonderful to see her growing up and car surfing, which took me like to the age of 30 to perfect….:)))

Bob not even Norman Mailer has had a look in this forum of late (that’s bad)………my dog is sick of eating his food from the daily rag with only editors choice opinions and crappy cropped photos of another war, famine or a celebs jockstrap on his girlfriend

by Imants | 03 Jul 2008 06:07 | The Boneyard, Australia |
your dog maybe should eat his food on better newspapers then. not to be negative but i really wouldn’t put “ANOTHER” war famine and celebrities in the same phrase in that way. there are people that are trying hard out there. I’m tired of bitching bitching and only bitching. I’ll be never tired of putting my life into this job and seeing good work shot from the heart.

by Guy Calaf | 03 Jul 2008 08:07 (ed. Jul 3 2008) | Paris, France |
You may…………… but the newspaper editors are only there in that position to sell more papers so a celeb going hungry in a war zone sells and sells well, even better if sponsored by the war office…………..

by Imants | 03 Jul 2008 08:07 | The Boneyard, Australia |
ok ok. i see your frustration. been in oz for 6 weeks around xmas and was quite bitter about the market there myself. i actually went to no meetings with clients on my entire stay. no features sold and agents are not gonna give out a few pictures from a story for pennies. i feel your pain. is your solution putting Angie and Brett in Chad on one poor meal a day for years while living with Darfurian refugees? i don’t think they could do without their vitamin water and personal trainers. cheers mate

by Guy Calaf | 03 Jul 2008 08:07 | Paris, France |
forget the trainers…….. let the papers go broke and into receivership, send in a new bunch of turkeys ( owners) and hope the buggers can reinvent themselves into something usefull ………….. my dog used to read Sun Tzu’s" Art of War", as others before him he reckons the whole caper is a bit of a Sunday myth
