X-ray at airports. Bad for cameras?

I’ll be travelling with my camera in a few weeks time. And I’m thinking whether I should put the lens/camera in my luggage or take it with me and thus get it X-rayed. Does x-ray affect lens/camera in any way?
Or well, any thoughts on the issue guys? :)

I guess its safe to have the camera close to me = take it as hand-luggage. This was my original choise of course, but I just wanted to make sure that nothing can happen to camera/lens while they’re going through x-ray scans. I guess nothing will then, thanks again! :)

While travelling i never put my cameras in luggage… i always carry it with me…no matter wat. You can kill two birds with a single stone.. 1. This way u can make sure ur camerais safe.. 2. In case of any uneventuality.. u may be able to take pictures..

Yeah, absolutely! Again, I would never even though of putting the cam together with my luggage if not the x-ray question. But since its safe, then my camera is going with me all the way! As it usually does :))

I think its not safe, because X-RAY very strong, make damage ccd/cmos

I have been travelling and having my digital equipment through X-rays, so far i didnt have any problem and of course always taking my cameras as hand luggage. cant risk it.

Sumaryanto, do you have any evidence to support that? Like, of the scientific variety?

After a long time exposition to a high energy electromagnetic radiation source any solid state electronic device may have serious trouble. Just as long exposure to high temperatures will, in time, cause failure of electronics.
This said I have no idea of how much radiation an image sensor can take before damaging, I’ve never heard of such problems up to now and on the other hand only recently have airport security x-ray machines been upgraded with more powerful x-ray sources. :D

According to USA’s TSA (Transport Security Administration):
“None of the security equipment – neither the machines used for checked baggage nor those used for carry-on baggage – will affect digital camera images or film that has already been processed – slides, videos, photo compact discs or picture memory cards.”

Some claim the magnetic hand-held metal detectors can harm digital media, but I didn’t find any reliable source of info confirming it.
