Are you going to the Festival du Desert? If not you should if you are going to be in the north. It’s in he second week of January (I think) in the Taureg region north of Timbuktu. I had planned to be there this year, but other stuff has gotten in the way.

I am not sure about going to the festival of the desert right now, but
I know I will be going to Timbuktu. Have you been there?

I dont know if you’re aksing to me if i attend this festival, and if i have ever been to Timbuktu.
Both answers are No, unfortunately.
I went to Mali in 2000 to visit this friend i told you and could not go to timbuktu, cause it’s far away from anything, i don’t remember if there are 700 km of bad road to go, or something like this.
With this i’m not saying it’s imposible to go. No, absolutely not. Even there’s a plane i think from Bamako.
I stayed like one day waiting for a kind of truck, with a friend, on the road that leads to Timbuktu, but we never find any truck or nobody to go there, so we came back to Bamako.

About this festival you say, well i’m living right now in Mexico, and won’t be able to move overthere. eventhough now you talk about it, i’d like to.

Ok, i don’t know if you have any question about Mali, i went there when i was younger than now obviously, and was always surrounded by this people i know there. But if i can help you, you just ask and i’ll try to answer the best i can.
fianlly please sorry my english, it’s been a long time without communicating in this language.

And finally finally i send this mail to know about them, now i’m waiting for an answer.

Hi Laetitia,

Thank you for your inquiry to your friends in Mali.
Were you able to connect with them about my contacting them for information?

Best regards,
Patricia

hi patricia, i was in mali a couple of years ago – only a month, so concentrated on the 3 high-spots: djenne, dogon, timbuktu – all exceeded expectations. unfortunately the guide for dogon country i had was next to useless and cannot recommend, but i may have an email for an excellent chap in timbuktu – will have to check.

when are you going? i was there in april and i cannot overstate the problem of dust. i was shooting film and in spite of endless precautions everything got scratched. assuming you are shooting digi, i say take 2 bodies and dont change lenses if at all possible. also, in spite of being a desperately poor country, it is not an especially cheap place to travel (compared to asia, for example).

you can pm me if you have more specific questions…

best of luck, david
