Radiation vs digital vs film

How does radiation affects film and digital cameras?  I am planning to work in the chernobyl are for a few days inside the qquarantine zone. Anyone has any experience with it?

I’d be more concerned about the effect radiation has on you. Cameras can be replaced.

You might have to replace your cameras anyway – along with all of your clothes and anything else potentially contaminated with dust or dirt, which contains Strontium 90 and Caesium 137 which have a half life of 30 years.

You’ll also be smart to take your own food and water, as the local water sources will also be contaminated.

Taking a Geiger counter or dosimeter would be a good idea as well, if you plan on wandering about.

CF cards are not affected by radiation, and, since it is generally at a reasonable level in the area, your future offspring should be ok as long as you keep the visits short, although dust could be a problem (which can be easily offset by wearing one of those paper masks you’d use to sand your kitchen table). food is available in the area (and conforms to different gustative standards than what you’d likely wish for), so is bottled water, and so is a local potato schnapps that has quite a high level of potency. I’d take deodorant and magic soap (the stuff that evaporates) as clean washing water could be an issue. You’ll get yourself scanned for contamination on the way out of the forbidden zone, so anything too problematic will be detected. i second the dosimeter, and lots of spare batteries for it. If you want to play it safe, take iodine tablets.

Thanks Sion, thanks Matthias.

your advices are very useful

I will actually be accompanied by a gide and I have some experience in Chernobyl – I think I’ll try to make a few visits 2-3 days long each.
